Electromagnetic Environmental Effects

HAZARDS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION TO ORDNANCE (HERO):

EG&G supports commercial and government customers in the development and E3 testing of new and modified ordnance and weapon systems. We apply HERO, EMV, EMI, and EMP engineering and technical expertise in solving electromagnetic compatibility issues for land, sea, and air applications.

HERO/EMC TESTING:

EG&G engineers perform pre-test analyses, develop test plans and procedures, acquire and instrument test hardware, perform tests, monitor test instrumentation, capture and analyze test data, and develop detailed test reports at E3 test sites throughout the world.

TEST FACILITY SUPPORT:

EG&G engineers and technicians operate and maintain government owned test facilities and test environment generation equipment. Support includes daily routine maintenance through complex integration of new transmitters and instrumentation systems into existing facilities.

HERO SURVEY:

EG&G engineers and engineering specialists perform instrumented surveys of U.S. Navy ships and shore facilities to document the electromagnetic environment created by local transmitters. The information is analyzed against known ordnance susceptibilities to create an operating instruction tailored to each site.

FLIGHT-DECK EME SURVEY:

EG&G engineers and engineering specialists perform multi-level surveys of the flight decks of U.S. Navy air-capable ships to establish the electromagnetic environment encountered by fixed and rotary-wing aircraft during take-offs and landings. Data gathered during these surveys is used in ship topside design.

HAZARDS OR ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION TO PERSONNEL (HERP) AND FUEL (HERF) SURVEY:

EG&G engineers and engineering specialists conduct instrumented surveys of inhabited topside shipboard areas to determine potentially harmful levels of electromagnetic energy generated by ownship transmitters. Areas of concern and recommendations for their mitigation are produced in detailed reports.

HERO DOCUMENTATION:

EG&G personnel produce HERO/EMC technical reports, analyses, test plans, technical manuals, and handbooks for use by government personnel. Additionally, they operate and maintain the HERO data bases used to archive all relevant EMC documentation produced by government and contractor personnel over the last fifty years.
