Technical Support
for Intelligent Systems Development
EG&G provided technical support to Sandia National Laboratories
for the development of intelligent machine systems. These systems
are complex electromechanical assemblies that use a variety of
custom and off-the-shelf hardware and software. The systems rely
heavily on integrated computer controllers, sensors, mechanical
manipulators, and graphic displays for the operator.
Mechanical technican personnel performed the following functions:
- Design, development, and coordination of fabrication of robot
equipment such as fixtures, prototype models, robot tolls and
end effectors and support equipment.
- Work with general guidelines and problem definition and solve
non-routine problems.
- CAD design of equipment for state-of-the-art robotic systems,
maintenance of systems and drawings.
- Design and installation of hydraulic/pneumatic controls and
occasional machining of components when rapid prototyping of
development components was required.
Electrical/Electronics personnel performed the following functions:
- Development of advanced robotic systems.
- Assisting in design, fabrication, checkout, installation,
testing, and documentation of major automation systems.
- Analysis of electrical problem areas and recommendation of
possible solutions.
- Design and installation of electrical power subsystems.
- Training of other personnel.
- Supporting mechanical/electrical/electronic fabrication.
Hardness Evaluation System (HES)
EG&G built a completely transportable, computer-driven EMP test
system mounted in shock-mount transportainers. HES included a
TEMPEST computer system, fiber optic links, automated pin-tester,
generator/amplifier system, delivery up to 2kW CW/20 kW pulse
from 10 kHz to 15 Mhz. EG&G continues supporting operation and
maintenance of the HES.
Portable Hardness Surveillance Test System (PHSTS)
EG&G outfitted an over-the-road, 10 x 50 trailer with a TEMPEST
shield room, ECU, computer-driven EMP test system, fiber optic
links, and a generator/amplifier system delivering up to 2kW CW
and 20 kW pulses from 10 to 150 Mhz. The system was designed around
commercial off-the-shelf equipment. EG&G performed factory acceptance
tests and demonstration tests and provided USAF personnel with
on-the-job training. EG&G continues supporting operation and maintenance
of the PHSTS.
